FHS forms new Job Club |
By Nancy Natividad |
Many students aspire to leadership in high school organizations, but relatively few get the chance. Recently resource room students decided to take the initiative to create the “Job Club,” to cater to their needs and to ease the transition to the working world. “It will be one of their own opportunities to be officers of their own club,” said adviser Sue Corrigan. “The goals are to give members who are interested (support) to being great workers.” The club will include current and former FHS resource students, although jobs aren’t required. Job Club will be student-run, with the members deciding monthly discussion topics. The graduates will give current students viewpoints on daily work after graduation. “I think it’s exciting,” said senior Melissa Hood, who will help out with the job club. “It’ll be a good experience for the students in Vocational Preparation.” The club started with about a dozen members today with their first meeting. The idea is supported by employment agencies such as Flathead Industries and Westmont. The club may take the club experience one step beyond the school by going bowling. There, the students will talk about themselves and their jobs while knocking over the pins. Job retention is low for the disabled community, and one of the best ways to improve retention is a support group, according to Corrigan. “In Job Club you learn what skills people use in their job,” said senior Todd Vetrone, who will also help with the project. Corrigan, for one, is optimistic about the club’s potential. “Of course we’re gonna have fun,” said Corrigan. “It’ll be a casual get-together and will be great to put on resumes.” |
