Two FHS students become National Merit finalists When Dennis Meredith and Andy Christofferson sat down in the cafeteria their junior year to take the PSATs, they were no more interested in the test than any of the hundreds of fellow test-takers. What they eventually walked away out — national recognition, thousands of dollars of scholarship opportunities and eventual merit finalist status — made the test more than worth it, however. |

Speech team to send seven to Nationals Winning a state championship usually includes assemblies or raising a banner to the roof of a gymnasium. But if you are a member of the Flathead High Speech and Debate Team, winning a state championship means going back to practice for another week of preparation for the next tournament. |

Budget problems arise in District 5 School District 5 will be required to layoff one elementary school teacher due to a budget shortfall if no additional retirements are announced by March 1, according to District 5 Business Manager Todd Watkins. The budget problem currently does not effect FHS, however, by the year 2000-2001 it will be a major issue. |

That’s how many carcinogens are in one cigarette, but this apparently doesn’t detour 48 million Americans — or about 25% of our society — from smoking, according to a poll by the American Cancer Society. |

Lccal company donates money to math department Math has the capacity to expand one’s mind to new and unexplained limits. Today students use calculators to expand their horizons. However, the price of the calculator has put it out of reach for some students. Math teacher Janet Kuchenbrod approached Semitool about donating money to a scholarship program to help students interested in pursuing math and science to obtain calculators. The math department received $500 for the scholarship program. |
