Last Valentine’s Day, the majority of Flathead students were kicking back with friends or planning romantic excursions. However, one group of students lead by English teacher Sue Brown and guidance counselor Pat Nolley were flying high above the United States, on their way to our nation’s capital for one of the busiest weeks of their lives. Close Up, a program out of Washington, D.C, brought 140 students as close to our government as it is possible to be. Students toured monuments, historic sites, museums and government buildings and participated in workshops on exactly how government works. By the end of the trip, nearly everyone came away with a deeper understanding of how our capital functions and the challenges that have to be overcome. Despite 15-hour days, cramped hotel rooms, bad hotel food and cheesy slogans (“Democracy is not a spectator sport.”), all of the 28 FHS students who went on the trip enjoyed it.. |

Diversity: Students discover culture through Close-Up For all their lives, they had lived on opposite sides of the world, yet for one week they lived on opposite sides of a hotel room. On Feb. 15-21, junior Matt Nelson and sophomore Grant Hewitt embarked on an intellectual, as well as cultural, journey through the Close-Up foundation. Their roommates traveled from Pakistan to be part of the international program. |

Montanans take on gun control may be off target A common misconception among Montanans is that the gun control lobby is out to take away their right to have firearms. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. On Thursday, Feb. 14, Close Up members attended a lecture by Robin Terry of Handgun Control Inc. When asked if her organization wanted to disarm the public, her answer was a resounding “no.” Handgun Control doesn’t wish to take away your guns, or repeal the Second Amendment, they wish to only to make guns safer and keep them out of criminal’s hands, Terry said. |
