A dream of FHS drama teachers David Hashley and Greg Adkins was fulfilled as “On Golden Pond” started rehearsals last week. The play will debut April 2. “My approach of this play is different,” said Adkins. “I want the message of the play to get across to the audience, rather than the play itself.” The play, which will cost nearly $6,000, has been a dream for Adkins and Hashley for three years. The cast is small, with only eight members and a tech crew of five students and four supervisors. “I started bawling when I saw the list,” said sophomore Jennifer Fawcett. “I honestly, honestly didn’t expect it because I was so nervous in auditions. This is my first time ever in a play at FHS.” Fawcett is not the only fresh face in the play. Senior Melissa Nausler will also make her drama debut. “|t was the first time I ever tried out for a play,” said Nausler. “I just decided at 3:40 (on the second day of tryouts) to try out and I kept saying I can’t believe I’m doing this. I double-took three times when I saw the list.” This play is the first in nearly five years that will tour beyond FHS. One show will be in Big Sandy, Mont., Hashley’s hometown, where the cast will travel to learn about the town’s residents. “I’m going to put a lot more effort in,” said junior Peter Bailon. “We’re going to try and convey more to the audience.” The play deals with a man learning to grow old. Members hope it will be a production that audiences will never forget. “I think this play will be a great experience for people to watch,” said junior Chris Jambor. “It touches the whole array of emotions.” |
