For a career of teaching and coaching that began in 1964, Flathead High Athletic Director Gene Boyle was awarded the the Service Citation Award from the Montana High School Association on Jan. 19. “I was totally surprised,” said Boyle. “I had no idea I would be getting it.” The ceremony where Boyle received the award was filled with 180 school officials. As the description was read of the person receiving the award, Boyle was astonished to realize they were talking about him. “I was just kind of numb after I figured out they were talking about me,” said Boyle. To get information about Boyle, the MHSA contacted Dona Weaver in the main office. Weaver was able to offer information such as Boyle receiving 71 technicals in eight years of coaching athletics. “It’s great to be honored in front of your all your peers,” said Boyle. Boyle has been very supportive of the MHSA in past years. He has been on many committees, and is currently on the Regionalized Scheduling Committee as well as the Soccer Committee. “Flathead High School is really lucky to have someone who would give up that kind of time and energy,” said Weaver. Many students at the high school look forward to the support and energy Boyle puts into everything he does. “His high fives on game days really pumped me up,” said junior Bravette basketball player Sarah Ondov. The Service Citation Award that Boyle received was one of five that will be handed in’98 by the MHSA. Said MHSA executive director Jim Haugan: “These awards are given out very discreetly, we don’t just hand them out.” |
