The cutting edge: FHS students Emett, Broderick flourish on the ice

By Blake Thompson

As students head up towards Big Mountain, some students stay inside — but not to keep warm. They take to the ice skating rink.

Senior Rani Emett and junior Kim Broderick have competed together for about four years, practicing three times a week at the Whitefish Mountain Trails Skating Center.

“We skate for about two hours every session,” said Emett. “You have to keep pushing yourself to work harder and harder in the short period of time that we have.”

As the pair is only able to practice three months out of the year at Whitefish, Emett and Broderick must seek others places to practice.

“It is extremely hard to keep up with the competition,” said Emett. “You have to practice or you’ll lose everything.

“We car pool to Helena and other places just to practice. It never ends.”

Broderick’s advice to those interested in skating?

“Shoot for the moon,” she says, “Even if you miss, you’ll fall among the stars.”
