Students choose snowmobiling over traditional winter sports
While most families are sitting in a quiet livingroom in front of a warm fire during Christmas vacation, junior Lisa Keller’s family is plowing through the cold snow on snowmobiles.

As students head up towards Big Mountain, some students stay inside — but not to keep warm. They take to the ice skating rink.

Senior Rani Emett and junior Kim Broderick have competed together for about four years, practicing three times a week at the Whitefish Mountain Trails Skating Center.

Braves basketball looks to better last year’s regular season mark
The Flathead Braves basketball team ended last year with a surprising two-game winning streak on the road to qualify them for the state tournament, and with three returning starters, the ‘97-’98 team is off to a good start, winning their first two games 67-65 against CMR, and 54-39 against Libby.

Flathead continues proud tradition with opening win at home
Paul Stelter leaving the Flathead High swim team seemed a bit like Tommy Lasorda leaving the Los Angles Dodgers — seemingly unthinkable. But last year marked the end of Stelter’s contract and at mid-season, Arizona native Neil Virtue became the new head swimming coach.

Upperclassmen strengthen winter sports teams
In athletic pursuits, rookie phenoms are nothing new.  But in high school athletics, rarely are those rookies seniors. The 1997-98 Flathead winter athletic teams breaks those trends. Swimmers Lindsay Hopkins and Aaron Ober, and wrestler Dan Polk are all rookies in their respective sports and have enjoyed early success.

Cross country teams take national ranking at Fresno, Calif.
Flathead cross country is a program deep in tradition, but never before has the team reached the level of 1997, when it was ranked 24th nationally — the highest Flathead has ever been.
