Teacher Sylvia Heselwood entered a drawing put together by the Flathead administration in which the winner would receive a personal day, while Principal Gary Martin and Vice-Principal Peter Fusaro would teach in the teacherís place. Heselwoodís name was chosen, so she let Martin and Fusaro stir things up in her classes on Dec. 8. ìWe gave her a personal day,î said Fusaro. ìShe can do whatever she wants.î Martin and Fusaro ran Heselwoodís classes. The math students had been learning about measurements, so for a project they got to make peanut butter pizza with Martin and Fusaro. ìIím excited, ì said Fusaro. ìIt sure beats chasing students around all day.î Fusaro already had five years of experience in the kitchen. ìI worked at Perkins in Bozeman for five years,î said Fusaro. ìThatís what I did.î The math students put their measuring skills to use, but all the students got to watch and enjoy the food. ìMr. Martin and Mr. Fusaro have both been very enthusiastic about being in the classroom and working with the students,î said Heselwood. Throughout the rest of the day the students worked on homework as usual. Martin took the morning classes, and Fusaro the afternoon. The math students said they enjoyed the cooking experience and meeting the faculty. ìI enjoy cooking,ì said senior Nathan Johnson. ìI would do it everyday.î ìTheyíve been looking forward to this for at least two weeks, planning this as part of life skills math,î said instructional aide Annette Jandron. ìThey picked the recipe themselves.î Martin said he is excited to spend time out of the office and work with the students and the other teachers. Said Martin: ìThis gives me a wonderful opportunity to integrate with the kids in the learning process.î |
