Small-town girl sophomore Josey Walterskirchen will head to the bright lights of the big city of Las Vegas this summer. Walterskirchen won’t be betting on blackjack, however — she’ll play in the U.S. Junior National Tournament, sponsored by Nike to expose high school players to college coaches and scouts. “There are teams from all over the West,” said Walterskirchen. “There’s supposed to be 125 college coaches.” Walterskirchen was selected for the team from a pool of sophomore and junior athletes who were chosen as All-State or Honorable Mention All-State at the AA girls’ basketball tournament in November. A starter for the Flathead Bravettes, Walterskirchen earned an honorable mention as a guard. Her Junior Nationals team, called Montana Hoops, will be headed by Western Montana College coach Kevin Eneglant. Brad Walterskirchen, Walterskirchen’s father, said this trip will be important in developing his daughter’s skills. “We’re more interested in a state championship for the Bravettes right now,” said Brad Walterskirchen. “It’s a chance to get better and help her team.” Walterskirchen said playing against a wide field of athletes will show her what she needs to work on in her remaining two high school seasons. “Going down there and playing people from other states will be intense basketball,” said Walterskirchen. “Big people pushing me around will show me what a wimp I am.” The trip includes practicing in Bozeman on July 13, then staying in Las Vegas from July 14-19. Walterskirchen said she anticipates getting to know her opponents. “I’m really excited because I get to meet people I’ll play against,” said Walterskirchen. “What a great opportunity to meet kids and meet friends,” said Brad Walterskirchen. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for her to go have some fun.” Walterskirchen, a basketball player since third grade, said she doesn’t mind devoting more of her time to her athletics, adding: “I love basketball — basketball is my life.” |
