Ultimate Frisbee: the latest sports craze

By Jake Baranek

Once the intramural volleyball season was over for seniors Lindsay Hopkins and Scott Clark, they decided to search for other alternatives to varsity sports — and what they found was intramural softball.

“It’s a great opportunity to wear our fancy shirts and take in some rays,” said Hopkins. “It’s nice to be in a sport without the varsity pressures.”

Last Monday the intramural softball season began. FHS students seniors Scott Clark, Rob Brekke, Toby Winters, Tyson Hall, Cooper Hatton and sophomore Erin Knutson, as well as students from other local schools,  come together every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to participate.

“It’s basically fun,” said Winters. “We don’t have coaches bossing us around or anything, and we get to practice when we want to.”

Intramural softball games officially began on April 9, and Hopkins’ and Clark’s team, the Snot Rockets, won their first game.

Snot Rocket rookie Hopkins wasn’t too surprised about the outcome of the team’s first game considering the history of the team and the support from other students on the team. She joined the Snot Rockets because the team has the same name as Hopkins’ intramural volleyball team this past year.

“We have a title to defend,” said Hopkins. “Being a Snot Rocket is a matter of pride, commitment and tradition, and we’ll do whatever it takes to keep it that way.”

Clark, along with Snot Rockets teammates Hall, Hatton, and Hopkins, has high hopes for their next game, which is scheduled for Monday at Rawson Field.

“We are just trying to keep the wins going,” said Clark. “And I’m just trying to start a legacy.”

Players say that meeting new people and spending time with friends are the motivating forces behind playing intramural softball.

“It’s a great game and you always have fun,” said Clark. “Besides, it’s a great alternative to sitting around the house and watching TV.”
