The crowd was tiny, but the games were huge. The Bravettes started a show of incredible soccer play last Saturday that continued into the Braves’ match. The quick feet and head work and even acrobatic throw-ins by senior Rob Stevens, kept the fans enthralled throughout their double header. “We came out stronger than in past games,” said Stevens. “We have gone to a 4-3-3 field position to allow for more attacking,” said Braves head coach Tom McFarlane “(It will) make the game more fun to watch.” The new position of having four attackers, three mid fielders and three defenders was effective. The Braves remain unscored upon in their first five games. “We are looking to have no injured,” said coach McFarlene. “Many times when we play a team with less talent, they will play very physical.” When the Braves were up 2-0 they put in some of their second string. “It was too early in the game to bring in the bench,” said junior Brandon Judge. “We were only up 2-0 “ Judge gave the Braves their first goal of the game, heading in a cross from sophomore Dustin DeYong. “I was thinking: don’t choke,” said Judge. Shortly after his first goal, Judge scored unassisted to put the Braves up 2-0. The rest of the half was dominated by the Braves taking shots in the Eagles territory. Junior Nick Frentsos put the Braves up 3-0 to open the second half. “I skillfully bounced (the ball) off the goal and a nearby Eagle,” said Frentsos. Kyle Burgess scored on a penalty kick to bring the score to 4-0. The final two goals were made by Judge, bringing the final score to 6-0. Said Gamble, “We should have beaten them 10-0” The Bravettes faced the Eagles, a team they hadn’t beaten in three years. The Bravettes gave up their first goal of the season to Tera Anderson of Big Sky . “They (Big Sky) were tougher than we thought,” said junior Allison Lloyd. The Bravettes answered with a goal from junior Toni Astle for Flathead’s first goal. Derin Morton then scored for the Bravettes second goal. The final goal of the first half was scored by freshman Katie Hammer, who then blasted it past the outstretched Eagles keeper. In second half action, senior Sarah Saverud sprained her ankle fighting for the ball against a Big Sky attacker. “I had injured my knee a few days earlier so I was favoring it,” said Saverud “When I was pushed by her (the Big Sky player) I fell and I sprained my ankle.” The final Bravette goal came from sophomore Erica Rauk. Big Sky ended the game with one more goal, to make the score 4-2 Flathead “We played awesome and we deserved this game,” said Junior Crystal Herzog.
