Ackerly wins state teaching award for chemistry

by Blake Thompson

After 11 years of teaching, FHS science teacher Kathy Ackerly has made a name for herself — as was evident when she was named chemistry teacher of the year for 1997.

“There are so many other teachers all over the state,” said Ackerly after learning she had won the award. “They have so much more experience and credentials than I do.”

According to her students, it’s no surprise that Ackerly won the award.

“I think she is relentless in teaching us how to understand the basic elements of chemistry,” said junior Jen Smithlin.

“She is a teacher that listens and helps us to understand the concepts of chemistry better,” said junior Nick Woody.

Every year a chemistry teacher is given the honor of being named chemistry teacher of the year. That teacher is selected among teachers who make up the Montana Science Teacher Association.

Ackerly would receive the award at the Montana Science Teachers Association convention in Billings but  she must teach a workshop and is taking students to the Columbia Falls  aluminum plant on a field trip.

Said Ackerly:

“I enjoy kids and their excitement for learning.”
