First FHS College Day to prepare students for 56 university reps

by Paula Bridger

College-bound seniors may find the complicated road to college a little easier to navigate after Oct. 9, when the Career Center will sponsor the first annual College Day.

The event comes a day before the annual College Fair, where representatives from 56 universities, colleges, technical and trade schools and military services will set up information booths in the gymnasium.

“(I want people to know about) not only four-year colleges but technology and two- year colleges,” said Craig Hunnicutt of the Career Center.

College T-shirts and sweatshirts also will be raffled off during College Day.

“There will be a drawing for the students who wear clothes representing the college of their choice,” said Hunnicutt. Teachers can also participate by wearing clothes from their alma mater and by discussing and comparing courses in their departments to those in college.

Hunnicutt’s hope is that College Day will prepare students to meet college representatives here for the College Fair on Oct. 10.

“(College Fair) will help me explore my options for college,” said senior Eric Hanson.

“Thousands of miles of travel is cut off for students taking advantage of the reps coming in from all over,” said Hunnicutt.

All parents are welcome to attend and learn about the colleges from which their children have to choose.

Said senior Amanda Miller, “(College Fair) will help me to find the perfect place for me next year.”

Ludden kayaks the world to become freestyle champion

In seven years of getting soaked and battling rough waters in his kayak, sophomore Brad Ludden has traveled twice to Chile, once to New Zealand and most recently to Ottawa, Canada, to compete against the best kayakers from around the globe.

Now, the sport may take Ludden away from FHS —  although he’s only a sophomore — to train in far-away New Zealand. Ludden’s coach runs a kayaking school in New Zealand,  where Ludden may spend most of his second semester.

This is the life of the of the number three junior kayaker in the world.

FHS teachers gain worldly knowledge in summer travels

From Finland to Spain to England, FHS teachers traversed the world this past summer. Teachers Bruce Riley, Linda deKort, Donna Danz and Jean Barragan found they could not only gain new knowledge of the world, but could share what they knew, too.

“I enjoyed my trip and learned a lot,” said Riley, who went to Finland. “But the happiest moment was getting back on U.S. soil.”
