Skipping policies renewed

by Paula Bridger

About 26 students have been suspended for skipping Saturday school this year.

This is not a new policy — out of school suspensions have been in the school handbook for two years — although they were not strongly enforced. The new administration is now enforcing this once ignored rule, unlike last year, when students just rescheduled Saturday school. If a student misses Saturday school they will be suspended for two days.

“(If you) don’t serve we are not going to give them an opportunity to reschedule,” said Vice Principal Peter Fusaro. “You’re suspended for two days, but not if Saturday School is served.  We (the administrators) see Saturday School as a good thing.”

If a student is suspended they will miss two full days, usually Monday and Tuesday. Suspended students will receive a zero in all their classes with no chance for makeup.

Senior Brandon Barnett was given a Saturday School for being tardy to a class six times.

“I came five minutes late to Saturday School and was suspended for it,” said Barnett.” I was suspended Monday and Tuesday although I didn’t know it. I came half day Monday and Tuesday I worked on a speech all day. Last year I didn’t get suspended for coming late, but this year I did.”
