Oh, how the tables have turned.
The power structure between the Braves and Bravette tennis teams has turned a full 180 degrees in the past two years. Two years ago the Braves were coming off their second consecutive state championship and the Bravettes were struggling to make it to the state tournament.
This year the Bravettes are coming off winning their first division title in ? years. The Braves, on the other hand, struggled in their divisional match, placing third of three teams.
“We’ve gotten a lot deeper team this year,” said junior Lara Agather. “Instead of one or two players that are really good, we’ve got five or six.”
“There were some outstanding players that came through together,” said coach Dave Parker of the turn-around in the Braves tennis team. “Now with all of them at the University level, the only player left from that time is (senior) Paul Wilson. We’re kind of at a rebuilding time for the boys side.”
The Bravettes have been buoyed by two young, yet experienced sophomores — Ana Iwerson, and Tana Strand.
“Anna and I have been playing for a long time,” said Strand. “We have a lot of competitive girls that want to win and we practice hard.”
The Braves are at the point that the Bravettes were at last year, with a few strong players in Wilson and junior Andy Shottlekorb, and trying to gain the depth necessary for a successful team. The Bravettes, on the other hand, are at the point the Braves were at two years ago, with with two strong singles players in Iwerson and Strand, and a number one seeded doubles team of junior Eli Thomson and senior Jessie Wyman.
“I think the girls’ success is most attributed to these girls who’ve been playing since they were younger,” said Parker. “It’s their turn to dominate now. They’re pretty young and to take first and second at divisionals is impressive.”
All the success of the girls team wasn’t necessarily expected by Parker at the beginning of the year, but it didn’t come as a surprise either.
“I was a new coach and I really didn’t know the kids or the talent level,” said Parker. “The team came together pretty quickly so I’m not surprised with their success.”
According to some players, the success of the Bravettes has been largely due to having a new coach.
“I think it’s the new coach and the support he’s given us,” said Thompson. “He spent equal time with everyone and he makes sure he’s there to watch tour matches and cheer you on.”
Parker says he has really enjoyed the experience of coaching FHS tennis and expects good things for next year.
Said Parker: “I’ve really enjoyed myself and have been impressed with the players. I’m excited and I’m hoping for the best.” |
