I'd like to offer a challenge to the students of FHS. I've been talking with some of the Flathead alumni recently, the good ol' boys who remember going to the high school way back when they played football in leather helmets. They described to me a different age at this school. It was a time when school spirit and enthusiasm ran high, when the pride and honor of the school meant something to everybody, and when the Homecoming Football game (and all the events surrounding it) was a gargantuan event. As I listened to this remembrance of "how it used to be," I became inspired. That's where my challenge for you comes into the picture. Let's bring that old pride, enthusiasm, honor and spirit back to Flathead. Tenfold. In fact , I want to do more than that. I want to blow the good ol' boys out of the water and show them that this school hasn't dropped off a bit since they left. And what better place to start than Homecoming Week.
We need to start getting everybody in the school involved. I know some people think school spirit is stupid and pointless, and just for cheerleaders and "jocks." That isn't true. Even if you don't agree with the idea of school spirit, why not dress up on Super Disco Day or Black and Orange Day for the pure fun of it?
Another big aspect of making homecoming as magnificent as it once was is making dynamic floats for the Homecoming Parade. Picture 15 to 20 flatbed trucks loaded with kids, rolling down the road behind a marching band. That's what the parade has looked like for the past decade. I'd like that to change. I want to turn some heads this year. Being a chair of the committee for the senior float, I can guarantee you that is what we are going to do with this year's float, and I dare someone to try and better us.
I would like to see everyone participate in something. It can be as simple as helping your club with their float or as difficult as renting the Goodyear Blimp to fly over Rawson Field at game time, flashing, "GO BRAVES!" Have fun with Homecoming this year. Student Council has planned a lot of positive entertainment. We've got the Homecoming Olympics, the Bonfire, the parade, and of course, the big dance. I encourage you to try and get involved with these as much as you can. Let's bring back that spirit of old, and make this the biggest rager of a homecoming in the state!
That is my challenge. Now it's up to you.
