The crackle of the campfire on the African safari . a drum beating steadily in the distance - warding off elephants and gazelle from crops . the distant cough of a leopard and roar of a lion interrupt the calm as a baboon shrieks to warn of the prowling leopard . then, the clank of fine china is heard, as it is gently placed on white linen, reminding the hunters of the oncoming meal.

These may not be your ordinary costumes, but they were in Mark Armstrong's U.S. history classes. This was only a small example of the interactive and imaginative way that Armstrong approaches the subject of history.

hen Bill Cooper walked into the classroom on his first day of teaching, he was greeted by the faces of 38 rural elementary students. Excited and a little apprehensive, little did this 21-year-old novice teacher suspect that education would be his life for the next 35 years. Recently, after 13 years of service, Cooper announced his retirement as Superintendent of School District 5.
