Money lovers listen up and sharpen your pencils. Senior Brandan Schulze is hard at work proving that writing can be beneficial - and profitable.

Schulze entered a world-wide writing contest in the beginning of 1997. His first-place submittal earned him $500.

"I was amazed when I saw that I won first-place," said Schulze. "My mom wasn't home and my dad was asleep, but I ran in and told him to come check it out. I then called my friends to tell them about it."

The contest, sponsored by publisher Internovel, will conglomerate the work of the first-place submittals into a novel called The Fragile Glories of Morning.

Schulze entered his chapter 11 of The Fragile Glories of Morning over the internet to the publisher. Two weeks later, Schulze checked to see his placement and received a pleasant surprise.

"I started writing about this time last year ... on chapters two, four and five to try to make some money," said Schulze. "I got second on those chapters ... then didn't write for a little while once school started again."

Schulze is now entitled to any royalties earned on the book, which should come out late this year or early next.
