Due to an unexpected schedule change, the Flathead swim team held its first home meet ever in the month of January and took advantage of the change by posting a big victory Saturday at The Summit.
Although team scores weren't counted, the Bravettes swept all the individual events against a field including Missoula Big Sky, Sentinel and Hellgate.
Junior Kristin Rygg claimed two wins in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Teammate Amanda Hartmann was also a double winner in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.
Coach Paul Stelter said the team swam "fantastic," adding the win was a team effort.
"On a whole, for the girls the competition was amongst themselves," said Stelter.
Other Bravettes who took first place honors were freshman Jennie Nerison, 100 breaststroke; sophomore Julie Cummings, 100 backstroke; junior Chelsea Edwards, 100 flystroke; and senior Angie Blohm, 50 freestyle.
"I went really slow the first 75," said Edwards about her race. "I realized I had a lot of energy left so I went fast. It felt good."
Four different Braves grabbed individual wins: Senior Chris Williams, 200 IM; junior Steve Satterly, 50 free; and sophomores Andy Schottelkorb, 100 fly; and Dan Distefano, 100 breast.
The Flathead swimmers appreciated the number of people who watched the meet.
"There are more high school people than I've ever seen before," said junior Natalya McLees, who took third in the 200 IM.
Cummings agreed: "It's really nice when people come and cheer."
According to Stelter, tomorrow's meet in Missoula should be a bigger challenge.
"We'll see Bozeman," said Stelter. "They and Flathead are the top two teams."
