Guitar class rocks - and gets new class rolling

In the schedule book, Guitar II appears as just another new class in the music department; but the students who take the class say that it's a course offering that really rocks.

"Pretty much anyone who's in Guitar loves to play the guitar," said senior Tom Smithlin. "If you have fun doing it, it's fun to learn and progress. I didn't learn about the guitar until this class. Just reading out of books can't teach you how to play as well."

Beside playing and practicing in class, individual practice time is essential for the class.

"You kind of have to motivate yourself to be in it," said senior De Anne Price. "He'll (teacher Matt Vanzini) show you what to do, but you have to motivate yourself to practice on your own."

Class members say success takes hard work and most importantly a knowledgeable instructor who enjoys teaching.

Vanzini "always has his guitar strapped on and he plays and shows us how to do it," said senior Marcie Dougherty, "and if we don't get it, then he strums around and shows us again."

Said junior Ryan Brown: "He teaches people who have never seen a guitar how to play it. I might have learned guitar from some friends, but my knowledge of guitars wouldn't be as broad as it is now."
