School's on! (For frosh, anyway)

First, the bad news.

Since two school days have been canceled due to poor weather in the 1996-97 school year, District 5 students will have school on President's Day.

Now, the good news.

FHS will not have classes.

Here's the deal: the high school has a 183-day calendar and grades nine and under have 181 days. Because there were two snow days, FHS still has enough days to meet the state requirement of 181 days - one over the state requirement of 180 - while the lower grades only have 179.

"Flathead High School has always had 183 school days," said Vice-Principal Gene Boyle. "The teachers would rather be teaching than have PIR days. Since we have the extra days, the snow days didn't hurt us."

Unfortunately, if two more days are canceled, the high school will have to have a makeup day.

Still, with winter winding down, a makeup day at the high school seems unlikely - much to the delight of some students.

"I laugh at the foolish freshmen," said junior Ryan Nyquist. "They have to go to school."
