Every nine seconds, a teen driver is involved in a vehicle crash; every half hour, someone dies in a teen-driver accident.
Statistacally, it's no wonder that so many students at FHS have found themselves in accidents or handed $100 tickets.
FHS has it's own share of drivers who have either been in bad situations or simply refuse to recognize the rules of the road.
"I was on Main and there was this old lady walking across the cross-walk," said senior Anne Mare Ross. "The light was red and it turned green. I let go of the brake and I accidentally hit the little old lady. Then when I was in driver's ed., we were going through construction and this guy had a stop sign in his hand. Everybody kept moving so I kept going. I guess the guy wanted me to stop so he jumped in front of my car and I basically hit him."
There are some students who knowingly defy the rules and scoff at paying tickets.
"I've been pulled over eight times, but I've never gotten a ticket," said senior Stacy Pitts. "I thought you could turn left on red 'cause, hey, you can turn right on red. I've also gotten stuck in snow banks twelve times as well as sliding accross two lanes of traffic, up onto the sidewalk stopping just short of going through the window of Moose's."
Some students just have bad luck.
"I've gotten in two wrecks in the last couple of months," said sophomore Erin Ek. "The first one I'd only had my license for four days. I was going down a hill and there was a stop sign at the bottom. My brakes went out and I couldn't stop so I hit a car going through the intersection. The second wreck I was pulling out and there was a corner. I looked left, looked right, and pulled out. I hit a guy coming the other way. He hit me but it was my fault because I cut him off. For the next three years I pay $160 a month for insurance."
Said senior Matt Heller: "Last week I was driving to Lakeside behind a line of four cars. A white Mercury slammed on the brakes for no reason. I hit the van in front of me. I have to pay damages to the vehicle I hit and on my car."
