Tests show we have to work smarter, not harder

What would you say if I said students are working too hard at school? Too good to be true, right? Now, from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study, come statistics that indicate American students spend more instructional time at school and do more homework than students in either Japan and Germany.

S.T.A.N.D. gives good, clean fun

At Flathead High, the drug-education program has gone beyond the usual posters and police pep-talks that char- acterize many programs. The student anti-drug group Students Taking A New Direction (S.T.A.N.D.) is not widely known, but thanks to this program, some students have chosen to make lifelong commitments to not use drugs.

Wal-Mart polcy benefits locals, harms everybody else

Wal-Mart recently unveiled a new music policy under which albums the store considers "offensive" would no longer be allowed on any store shelves. Artists would have to produce a "clean" version, removing offensive material, in order to be stocked. Wal-Mart claims the policy is for the good of the customer. In the case of Flathead Valley, Wal-Mart's rejected business will fall into the laps of local merchants. Unfortunately, this side benefit will not be seen everywhere around the country.

Current schedule superior to proposed schedule

The Department Chairs recently voted 70-49 to accept a new time schedule for the next school year. The idea of the schedule change is to create a schedule where ALL students have the chance to take seven classes.

Don't ruin holiday season with a DUI

As the holiday break ap- proaches, I've heard a lot of talking about how people plan to spend their time. A majority of the itineraries involve a bit of indulgence in the tasty spirits of the season. In other words, lots of people are going to go out and get sloppy drunk.
