FHS soccer teams have high expectations for remaining season

Girls find abundance of strong leadership

Six seniors on the girls varsity soccer team shared the role of captain until they realized that too much of a good thing isn’t always … well, good. Now the captains are down to two: seniors Anna Saverud and Katie Stebbins. The alternate captain is senior Katie Hammer.soccergirls2.gif (56057 bytes)

There is a mixed reaction about the change of leadership.

"Hopefully it will give the players a chance to go and talk to the captains, and there will be more leadership and we can come together and work as a team," said Saverud.

"I thought that having six team captains was a good idea because all the seniors got to express their opinions and feelings," said Stebbins. "We could all also suggest what we should be doing."

Of the switch to two captains, Stephanie Hogan said: "I think that it is a good idea because the team will be more organized now and we will have specific people to talk to."

This year the Bravettes varsity soccer has a young team that consists of six seniors, seven juniors, and seven sophomores.

"It’s really nice to have a lot of sophomores on the team because we have all played together for a long time," said sophomore Savannah Tyree.

The Bravettes ended their undefeated season when they played Big Sky Sept. 23. Big Sky was the girls’ first tough competition.

"We could have worked better together as a team," said Hammer.

"I didn’t think that the score reflected our game," said Saverud. "I am really proud of how the sophomores played. Big Sky has three strong and experienced players which were a little too much for us."

Even though the Bravettes have had two losses they are still heading toward a great season.

Their next competition will be in Polson on Sept. 30.

Boys team like big group of friends

Only two sophomores are playing on the Braves varsity soccer team this year, sophomores Caleb Ambrose and Matt Warneke.

"You have to work harder to get playing time," said Warneke. "It’s pretty fun playing with older kids that are better than you; it makes you a better player."

The team consists of 12 seniors, four juniors, and nine sophomores. This year the team captains are A.J. Nash, Mike Herzog, and Jesse Mahugh.

Patt Wettach, one of the team’s seniors, enjoys having the team consisting with mostly seniors.

"It’s awesome because there’s been so many of us playing together for seven years," Wettach said. "When we are playing we don’t even have to look at each other and we still know what one another are going to do. We’ve been really good friends for along time and so when you go to practice it is like hanging out with a big group of friends."

The team feel positive about the season and expects to improve.

"We have good chemistry and we are undefeated." said Herzog.

"The season is going pretty well," said Wettach. "We are growing as a team and we (seniors) are incorporating everybody else on the team. Everybody on the team is very talented."

The Braves soccer team has a very good chance of winning state this year. Seniors A.J. Nash and Chris Daily said, "We’re pretty confident. We have a really good chance of winning state but we won’t see our competition until we see the teams at state."
