The speech team may once again be headed toward a state title.

On Oct. 14, FHS stole the show by winning the Kalispell Kickoff with a 257-point lead over the runner-up, Havre. The Flathead competitors are now ready to compete for the top spot against Bozeman, their main rival.

"We have a lot of really good new talent," said senior Josh Berg. "I think for sure we’re going to take state."

There are many events to look forward to this year, including a chance for the FHS team to get its fourth straight state champion title.

After cutting their teeth on the smaller schools, the varsity team was ready for more formidable competition.

In Missoula, on Oct. 27 and 28 at the Garden City Invitational Tournament, the varsity team was victorious again. FHS beat Bozeman, their long-standing rival, 234-197.

The individual winners were: Andrea Swanberg (Oratory), Josh Berg (Humorous Interp), Andrew Bissell (Parli Debate-Senate), Ryan Goeden (Expository), Sheena Istre (Extemp), Emily Doty and Courtney Bunner (Novice Team Debate).

The next meet for the varsity speech team was Nov. 3-4 in Butte, where the team took second to Bozeman.

"I’m excited because this is the best team I’ve been on this early in the year," Ian Ross commented. "Oh yeah, we’ll take state."

At the Kalispell Kickoff, FHS won 13 of the 14 events. Individual winners included Senior Andrea Urban and Junior Jeff Kauffman (Duo Oral Interp); Senior Jim Bennett and Junior Andrew Thomson (Varsity Team Debate) Senior Jenn Bruyer (Expository Speaking); Senior Andrew Bissell (Parli Debate), Junior Bobbi Jo Burrington (Memorized Public Address); Junior Kim Lloyd (Impromptu); Junior Colton Barton (Humorous Oral Interp); Junior Meghan Adney (Serous Oral Interp); Junior Sheena Istre (Extemp); Sophomore Laurel Hager-Johnson (Novice LD Debate); and Junior Emily Doty and Sophomore Courtney Bunner (Novice Team Debate).
