Softball ready to bring home trophy

Colton Barton - Arrow Staff

Senior catcher Sarah Stanhope warms up her arm at a recent practice.
If you ever asked Gene Boyle, the principal of St. Matthews School, "what softball is," the girls softball coach would comment, "it is a hard nosed, get down and dirty, highly competitive sport."

Boyle took over as the head coach four years ago with a little hard work in mind.

"I knew there would be a little building involved," says Boyle.

Last year, the girls placed third in their conference, and with seven out of nine returning starters this year, the y should be expecting a great season.

"The seniors were freshmen when I started and so to me, it is kind of a high water mark to get the job done," says coach Boyle.

"There really isn't a team we couldn't beat," says senior Kristi Burton. "As long as we play well, we can do it."

This season should be a great one to go out and watch, and well worth it as described by coach Boyle.

"It's a really high energy sport," says Boyle. "And these girls really know how to play the game and are also a credit to this high school."

The girls first game is in Helena on April 7th.

"I don't think we will have a problem," said senior Stephanie Lanfear. "We have a really good and deep team with lot's of experience."

Their first home game is on Easter Weekend at the Conrad Complex.

As far as coach Boyle is concerned: "it's time to bring home a trophy to FHS."
