FHS Volleyball
Coach Maureen "Moe" Boyle sat down briefly after her 2001 squad
won the State Championship for an interview with Arrow Reporter, Laura
Khor.
Q: When did you
first start playing volleyball?
As a freshman
at Butte High School. I played for Montana Tech and transferred to Carroll
College. I played in both places volleyball and basketball.
Q: What made you
decide to come to FHS?
I was coaching
in Helena and I was approached by people up here (Deb Carlson and Gene
Boyle). I took it as a great opportunity.
Q: What did you want to focus on when you came here?
My biggest thing
was to teach the girls to love the game.
Q: What are some
inspirational words you tell your team?
My biggest saying
is, 'Find a way.'
Q: A way to
?
Whatever. It
answers most anything. Get a serve or assist, run harder. You can do anything
you want if you want it bad enough.
Q: How does the
future look for FHS volleyball?
Good. Our program
is pretty strong. We got a few girls into Varsity games this year to give
them some experience. The girls in the sub-varsity are used to winning.
It's going to take some work in the off-season to rise to this level again.
I think our players are willing to put in the time and effort!
Q: Look back at
your first day as a coach and compare it to now. What do you think?
It certainly
was a long ride but a good one. I had girls who would put in the time
and effort. That's a lot of them trusting me to get them to this level.
Those girls in my first and second year, they set the precedent. To work
hard in the off-season and to do whatever it takes.
Q: Who is your
mentor?
Two for volleyball. John Ries and Jim Patrick. They were old high school
coaches of mine. They pushed us harder than we ever thought we could go!
Their expectations were way higher than ours individually but somehow
they got us to their expectations.
Q: Who has been
your inspiration?
My inspiration
has been my dad.
Q: Why?
He brought me
up in a sports-minded world. He taught me to be competitive and to always
do my best. He's been gone for six years, but his spirit lives in what
I try to do.
