Boys track and girls tennis looking to repeat titles
while others hope to improve.

Chelsea Brist & Michele Bailey - Arrow Staff

Boys and Girls Track and Field

This year Flathead's spring sports are definitely on the right track. Leading the way is the boys' track team. They are the defending state champions and have won the 1995, 1996 and 2000 state track titles.

Sophomore Michele Hanson prepares to throw the javelin at Rawson Field this week.

"We should be one of the
top three teams again this year if we can stay away from injuries and people compete like they did last year or with a little improvement," said coach Dan Hodge.

The team looks as strong as ever with nine returning state qualifiers. Including seven seniors and two juniors.
Though they have lost several field participants due to graduation, the track team has never looked better.

"Even without last year's seniors, we still have enough points to win last year's state meet," said junior Mark Ondov. "So this year we have high aspirations. Our goal is to go undefeated."

This year the girls track team is only looking to improve from their sixth place finish at state last year.

There are two seniors, three juniors, and three sophomore state qualifiers returning this year.

"We'll rely a lot on the girls with experience and talent to finish in the top five at the state meet," said coach Boschee. "We are relying on some upper class men and freshmen to contribute to the team."

Boys and Girls Tennis

Spring is here and for tennis lovers so is their favorite game. Unlike the Whitefish tennis team, which had to shovel snow off their courts before practice, the Flathead tennis team got on the court for practice on March 20.

First-year coach Jimmy Cripe said, "Basically Dave Parker built a strong base. I'll work from that and add my touch of strategy and team play. Hopefully we will make it more entertaining to the fans."

Senior Kenny Lard does his best to warm up during practice at FVCC courts.

With the girls winning state last year, a lot of the returnees are excited for the upcoming season and are hoping for another state title. The captains of the boy's' team are seniors Chris Daley, Andy Frey, and Kenny Lard. The captains of the girls' team are juniors Michele Bailey, Morgan Daley and Lizzie Iwerson.

"I have high expectations for the team and we are shooting towards a state championship," said Chris Daley. "As long as everyone gets their practices in we should be doing a lot of winning."

"I am hoping that the doubles are going to do really well this year," said Morgan Daley.

The Flathead tennis team travels to Helena for their first meet of the season on April 7.

Boys and Girls Golf

The Flathead Golf team started practice on March 27 after having to wait for the golf courses to open up after the long winter.

The coaches of the Flathead golf team are Doug Hashley and Jim Hann. Hashley has been assistant coach for the team for three years and Hann has coached for 13 years.

"We expect to be really competitive with both the boys and girls," said coach Hann. "All the boys from our state team are back. The boys should finish first and the girls should be in the top three."

Last year the Braves golf team got second place at the state championships and this year they are hoping to take home the gold.

"We should do pretty good this season because we didn't lose anybody last year so we all have the state experience," said sophomore Casey Keyser. "We have a good chance of placing well, if not taking state."

"I expect everyone to go out there this season and do the best that they can," said senior Sarah Ogle. "I hope that we can do a lot better this season."

The first big meet of the season is on April 13-14 at the Missoula Invitational.
