Student council has little real power

The other day I was shooting a game of pool with a few people on student council. While discussing a few of the issues that confront our school, I found myself asking, "could student council do anything to help?"

Unfortunately, student council has morphed from an active part in school government to glorified janitors. Now, don't get me wrong, student council does a gret job with the tasks they are given, but when we elect people as representatives or for office, why don't they make promises like, "I will work hard to clean your trophy cases," or "hey, I can plan a dance like there is no tomorrow!"

For most students the race really doesn't matter. The movie Election comes to mind, because there always seems to be one student who is hell-bent on becoming the next class president. Once elected, what are they going to do for me, though. Get me some paper towels, some soap in the bathrooms, or maybe some toilet seat covers.

Probably not because, "that isn't our area." Our school has turned into an apathetic mockery of student rights, right before my eyes. I have heard of history changing right in front of you, but I never thought it could be possible, or so blatent.

I guess what I am trying to say is that, nowhere in the definition of the phrase "student government" does it mention custodial arts.

Julio's Corner sets bad example for youth

I am feeling very discouraged about your latest article regarding "Julio's Coaches Corner." Julio Delgado is a role model to many young adults in this community. I feel that by promoting an alcoholic environment for teens to go on the weekends challenges his role model status. The bar scene for underaged studnets is menacing, pompus and ludicrous. Kids should have better things to do on the weekends like playing with other neighborhood kids regardless of age, or helping out in the community. What direction are we heading?
