Survey says FHS students
cleaner than average
C.J. CUMMINGS and SADIE JOHNSON - Arrow Staff Survey says FHS students cleaner than average
Flathead students cleaner than most Americans when it comes to washing hands A recent study in Newsweek magazine indicated that, on the whole, Americans are a pretty filthy lot. With only 49 percent of Americans washing their hands after using the restroom, cleanliness in the United States is at an obvious low, according to the results of the survey. The Arrow decided to do an undercover investigation in the bathrooms of FHS to see just how the students at the high school compare to the rest of the nation. During second period on Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the mens room at the bottom of the half floor stairs, 23 out of 31 students washed their hands after attending to their business 74 percent hand-washing rate. The Arrow survey shows that 24 out of 39 girls washed their hands after using the restroom, meaning almost 62 percent of you walked away clean. However, a recent Seattle Post issue showed that females are most likely to wash more frequently than males. That was not the case here at FHS. Not washing hands can result in several diseases, some minor, and others major. "Its absolutely mandatory that you wash your hands after using the bathroom, for your own health," said school nurse Margie Cook. "Before you eat, after touching or blowing your nose, and after touching your mouth." Cook says that washing your hands at a public sink is better than not washing your hands at all. "I am disgusted with these results that you have," said Cook of the Flathead High results. She explained that hand washing is the number one way to break the chain of infection. If a virus lands on your hand and you wash it, theres no problem. But if it lands on your hand and you touch your face, it could get into your body. " I wash my hands because bacteria buildup is ICKY!" Sara Wendling, 10. "Its habit, ever since I was little." Rachel Robinson, 11. "I wash because I like the feeling of clean hands, and clean hands is a turn on." Marcy Brakefield, 10. "I dont like the stuff in between my finger nails, because the taste of dirt is gross, when I chew my nails." Lindsey Guest, 10. "Its disgusting and nasty if you dont wash your hands, especially in public restroom, because you dont know what is in there." Whitney Dickson, 10. "Washing your hands is like wiping- you just have to do it." Chase Kisler, 11 "Guys who wash their hands after (doing their business) get all the hot chicks." Evan Carlson, 10. "People must have problems if they dont wash." Cassie Anderson, 11. "My friends uncle died of gonorrhea because he shook hands with someone who didnt wash after using the bathroom." Mac Mollohan, 11. "Its sick, because someone who works at a restaurant may have handled your food without washing." Mandy Andrews, 11. "This one time at band camp, I didnt wash my hands and I touched some girls flute and she ended up getting really sick and had to go home. I didnt mean to, it was an accident," Levi English, 11.
