Wrestlers peak in time
for divisional tournament

  Andy Frey - Arrow Staff

Senior Tyler Harrington helps lead the Braves to victory against the Big Sky Eagles.

Going into this weekend's divisional tournament, here at FHS, the Flathead Braves wrestling squad is hitting a high point at just the right time.

"I think we are peaking at the right time," said first-year coach Jeff Thompson. "That was our goal the whole year. We still have a lot of pma (positive mental attitude) and it spreads like wildfire."

"These last two weeks have been phenomenal," said senior Eric Richeson. "We only lost to CMR, who is ranked in the top four in AA, by four points."

On Jan. 23, Flathead wrestled a double header against the Missoula Big Sky Eagles, and the Polson Pirates. The Braves came out victorious in both matches with a 62-13 win over the Eagles and a 56-9 drubbing of the Pirates.

"(It was) unbelievable," said Thompson of the two matches. "At first I was almost speechless. These guys really wrestled hard for the seniors and they really put on a show for their last home dual. They wrestled their hearts out."

On Saturday Jan. 27 the Braves traveled to Helena to for contests with the Helena Capital Bruins and the Helena High Bengals. Flathead posted to more victories, beating the Bruins 48-35 and the Bengals 42-31, which pushed their final dual record to 12-6.

"As a team we did good because everybody needed AA matches for seeding at the divisional tournament," said senior Brian Ashe. "I (also) made some kid cry and embarrassed him in front of his home crowd."

The Braves feel confident for the most part heading into tonight, and they have a clear idea of what they want to accomplish at divisionals.

"I want to take divisionals," said senior Tyler Harrington. To do that "I have to get down to 125 lbs. and have enough energy to still wrestle to my ability."

"(I want to be) top three at divisionals," said senior Charlie Martin. "I want to make someone cry and make someone bleed, from the other team."

However, senior Frank Parmenter doesn't feel as confident going into his matches, but he is going to give it his all.

"I've peaked already, it's all gone. I've descended below sea level," said Parmenter. "I may have peaked already, but it's not to late to hurt somebody."

No matter how the team is feeling about the divisional tournament, coach Thompson has a good idea of what will happen.

"(We should) send 26-28 guys to state," said Thompson, "and wrestle to our full potential."
