Students find safety in 'risk' at weekend camp

  Sadie Johnson - Arrow Staff

It's ironic that this year's Teen Camp theme was "Risk It!" Why is CARE and STAND saying, "risk it," if what they really want is for teens to be safe?

But according to STAND advisor, Cal Boyle, the theme represents a perfect way to help teens to fight the peer pressure - by being different.

"When you are a sophomore, and junior, everyone is telling you what you should or should not do, and you don't feel like you are in control of your own life," says advisor Cal Boyle. "Take a risk with making your own choices to be drug free."

The purpose of teen camp was to increase students' leadership skills through guest speakers, small group discussions, and other fun student - oriented activities.

In past years, Teen Camp has been a positive impact on teen lives. This year there was one KJHS student, and 31 students from FHS.

Of those teens that attended they said they were very pleased with it and they had a lot of fun.

"Cal did a good job putting it together, especially in a short amount of time," says staff member Ashley Guy.

While at camp, they all had the opportunity to hear from guest speakers who talked about self-image, tobacco use, and communication and support topics.

"It was fun, we learned how to deal with drugs and how to stop it," said sophomore Jason Shanahan.

Said Boyle: "It was a good, in what the kids had to say in the end. I had fun, because you get to be around the kids that not only see me as a chemistry teacher, Mr. Boyle or coach, but as myself as well."

Teen Camp was also a perfect time to meet new people and new learn new things.

"It was a lot of fun, meeting new people, and talking about real deep things," says sophomore Ben Frentsos. On the last night of camp, they had a lot of fun with karaoke.

"Teen Camp was a lot of fun, although it was my first time going, But staying in the cabins were fun. Stand is a great way to get to know you new people that have the same standards as you."
