art teacher Buckhorn Measure assists a student. |
Usually the response of
a high school student at graduation is, "I'm out of here" or
"I'm heading for the city." 1994 graduate Buck Measure was no
exception.
After graduation and working a long summer at Bruckhauser
pool, Measure headed off on a Northwestern journey of sightseeing - from
the giant city of Seattle, Wash., to small coastal towns in Oregon. Tempted
by many other cities, there was still a small part of the Flathead valley
in Measure's heart wanting him to come back.
"I didn't like the fast pace of the people in the
other states (although) they all have they're qualities," said Measure.
"California has its great weather, and Oregon has its beautiful coast.
But I guess there is something about a hometown."
He came back to the valley and attended art classes
at FVCC, not just for experience but for a personal hobby.
"I want to show students that art does not have
to be a profession, it can also be a hobby," says Measure.
He attended FVCC for two and a half years and then transferred
to MSU, finishing with a major in elementary education and a minor in
art. He student taught at Peterson Grade School for 12 weeks, then took
up the opportunity to student teach at Linderman.
He was just married this summer to his high school sweet
heart, Tara Strand.
While student teaching, Measure was also assistant coaching
for the Flathead soccer team. Measure was on the first FHS team when he
was a junior in '92-'93. While teaching at Linderman, he heard about the
opening for the art job at the high school. Through the influence of art
teacher Mr. Mason, he put in his application, and everything else fell
together.
Buckhorn Measure now returns to FHS, not as a student,
but a teacher. Taking the place of a popular teacher well loved for his
great personality, Measure now has to measure up to the great teachings
of Roy Carpenter.
Measure started this semester and fell right into the
action.
And students say they aren't worried that he will be
able to measure up to the job.
Measure has a great attitude and is ready to build his
relationship with the students, they say.
"I am pretty energetic" says Measure. "
I want to make an enjoyable atmosphere for the students."
