Frank Parmenter and Tanner Marvin aim for a winning season through
practice and hard work.
Running stairs in sweats,
a coat and an even a hat is just one way that the Flathead wrestlers make
their weight classes. Does this equal success? Some might say that the
Braves have proven that what they're doing works by compiling a 6-3 team
record.
"We are allowed to cut water weight the practice
before a meet," said sophomore Brenton Brown. "One way to lose
water weight is by running in sweats. I ran off one pound by running for
15 minutes in sweats."
There might be a few negative sides to wrestling but
they are all made up for from the positive side of wrestling.
"The downs of wrestling would be losing and losing
weight," said junior Tanner Hafer. "But the positive things
about wrestling are hearing the home crowd scream for you at a home meet
once you win."
This is the first year that Jeff Thompson has coached
the Braves. The wrestlers agree that Thompson has the experience to bring
them to a state title. He also relates with the team very well.
"The determination in our team is a lot higher
because of coach Thompson," said junior Gerard Robinson. "He
makes us work hard and keeps it fun, so we are at least a step ahead of
our competition."
Thompson is seeing some positive things form in this
year's wrestlers, such as the wonderful word that we all work for but
don't all achieve team work.
"Our team is really starting to come together as a family and to
have success you need that," said Thompson. "The seniors are
pulling in the freshman and are forming one great team."
Some of the wrestlers to watch are Gerard Robinson with
a 14-1 record and Tanner Marvin with an 8-6 record.
In order to stay in shape for wrestling there are some
key points that the wrestlers need to remember. For instance if a wrestler
wants to be a state champ then the has to be committed to his goals and
be able to stay after practice to get a head start over his competitors.
"You need to be in shape if you want to be a state
champ," said Marvin. "We do live wrestling at the end of practice
and sprints. I want to take state and one of the things that I do is stay
after practice and drill."
