Student goes to Washington, D.C.,
thanks to scholarship

By Laura Khor- Arrow Staff

Senior Sean Nalty poses with important historical American documents after learning of winning the US Senate scholarship.

   Answer the following question:

Which of the following presidents was not previously a U.S. Senator?

        A. Warren Harding
        B. John F. Kennedy
        C. Richard M. Nixon
        D. George Bush

   Answer? Ask senior Sean Nalty.

Nalty won the United States Senate Youth Scholarship Program for the state of Montana, earning him an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. The Senate Scholarship had students take a written exam about the Senate, laws and senators. Nalty was notified he was in the top 10 percent of the state. The next phase in the competition was an impromptu speech. Then the top 10 state finalists had to answer an impromptu question that was videotaped and timed, with only two winners transpiring.

The award came as a surprise to Nalty.

"I was called by a reporter from the news station and asked if she could interview me about winning the Senate Scholarship Contest," said Nalty. "Sure enough, I went to my mailbox and found out I won."

Nalty will stay in D.C. March 3- 10 to Washington, D.C. On top of a great trip he receives a $2,000 scholarship for college.

"I'm ecstatic," said Nalty. "It was something I was really hoping for. There was a lot of competition for it. I was fortunate to receive the scholarship."

Nalty also gets to meet Montana's senators in Washington, D.C. and see the sights.

"I look forward to seeing the Supreme Court building," said Nalty. " Especially since so much has been going on concerning the election."

Nalty may have been surprised, but U.S. History teacher, Jean Barragan wasn't surprised at all.

"In Advanced Placement United States History Nalty had a profound understanding of past history, current events, congressional legislation and political maneuvers," said Barragan.

Another reason Nalty is interested in politics is that someday he might run for a public office. " I would like to serve on the Supreme Court someday," said Sean. "I might be a political adviser and then someday run for a public office."

By the way, if you know the answer to the quiz, was Richard M. Nixon.
