Following up on last year's
slogan, "We actually do stuff," the FHS student council has
been working hard and has already achieved many of their goals.
"Personally I feel like I've pretty well climbed
a mountain and almost reached the summit," said student body president
Trusten Williamson. "We've got a good group of kids here who take
responsibility for the people they are representing, and do the best job
they can with the tools and experience they've got to do it with."
In recent weeks the student council has agreed on many
decisions at FHS. They agreed to donate one-half of the cost to send a
bus to every state championship game that Flathead plays in, no matter
where the game may be, and also to donate $500 to the Senior Party fund.
In addition the student council has set Jan.. 12 as
the date for an informal dance in the small gymnasium. The dance, which
will last from 9-12 p.m., will cost $1 with an activity ticket or $2 without.
Perhaps one of the biggest discussions student council
has held was proposing a limit on their own budget, at a meeting on Dec.
12. The group decided that they would keep a running total of all the
expenditures on themselves, and limit them if they got out of hand.
"I'm happy with it (the decision)," said senior
class treasurer Andrew Bissell. "I think it will bring more accountability
to student council in terms of how much money we are spending on ourselves."
As far as plans for the future, student council has
held discussions proposing a Rock Fest as a venue for local bands. Activities
at the Rock Fest may include a Velcro wall, sumo wrestling, inflatable
boxing and other choice events.
The student council has been hard at work this year
to provide opportunities for the student body, and also provide opportunities
for the future of FHS.
"Generally speaking, the members have done a nice
job," said student council advisor and activities director Mark Dennehy.
"They have completed the traditional tasks that student councils
have done in the past, and in addition, they're working on some additional
items that will look to enhance our surroundings at FHS."
