Despite cameras, thefts continue at FHS

By Jim Bennett- Arrow Staff

Senior Andrea Urban protects her belongings with a lock under the watchful eye of a security camera.

Unless you live in a locker room, you have probably noticed the security cameras strategically placed in the halls of FHS to protect personal safety and to prevent theft. But according to Wade Radamacher, school resource officer, the occurrence of theft is almost as often as last year.

As part of an executive decision last summer, an updated video camera system was installed in the halls of FHS. Vice Principal Peter Fusaro says that the system is doing the job it was intended to do, but that further surveillance is needed for a tighter web of safety.

"The problems are where the cameras aren't," said Fusaro. "But they have aided in a few incidents."

Fusaro says that the areas not guarded, where cameras cannot be placed, such as the locker rooms, are where thieves cannot be as easily caught. Cameras at the exits of the school make it easy to spot people leaving with stolen objects, Fusaro said.

Senior Andrea Urban had items stolen out of her locker last year, but this year she attributes her theft-free locker space to a sturdy lock and the video surveillance system.

"The surveillance cameras definitely work. Since the cameras are visible, people now have a conscience," said Urban." They know the consequences of their actions, and they can be caught."
