Avalance ready for storm

You'd better check the weather report for when the Avalanche comes to town, and when you do you'll see four FHS students on the hockey team.

This year, the Glacier Avalanche hockey team includes four students from FHS, seniors, David Palchak, Nahum Tkachyk, Jeff Husby, and Steve Nystuen.

The hockey season started the second week of November. The team has already played four games and have an even 2-2-0 record.

"I think we'll do pretty decent this year," said Tkachyk. "We have a good team and should do well."

The Glacier Avalanche practices in Whitefish and is made up of players from all over the Flathead Valley.

"We get to meet people that go to different schools that we would never even know otherwise."

All agree that hockey is just as rough on TV as it is live.

"We play in the 16-18 year-olds and some of those guys get pretty big," said Nystuen. "It has gotten pretty rough out there."

Though they are covered in padding, it's hard to escape an occasional scrape or bruise.

Tkachyk remembers getting a concussion once and it's not uncommon to get a few scrapes from opponent's skates.

"We wear face masks and chin straps, and all of these pads so it's hard to fight," said Palchak.

Glacier Avalanche will face its next home match at the Whitefish rink Dec. 28, at 5:30 p.m. against Havre.
