
Cherry Valley Elementary School is located in Polson, Montana, in the
northwest corner of the United States. Polson is situated on the southern
shores of Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi.The
Mission Mountains, part of the Continental Divide, form a backdrop to the
school. This area is also home to the Confederated Salish & Kootenai
Tribes of the Flathead Indian Reservation. Cherry Valley School is also
part of the Mission Valley Curriculum
Consortium, which includes schools from Polson, Ronan, Pablo and Charlo.
The school was built in 1963 and later added to
in 1985 and 1990.
This year there are twenty three certified teachers. In addition, we have
a school counselor and speech therapist The school also has a large classified
staff, with eight teacher's aides assisting in the classrooms.
There is a special needs preschool, three sessions
of kindergarten, extended day kindergarten, two first grades, a primary
multiage class, two second grades, an intermediate multiage class, two third
grades, two fourth grades and a special education class. Average class sizes
are 20 for K-2 and 24 in the G3-4 grade.
Cherry Valley has a full time principal.
Cherry Valley School has a strong literacy emphasis built around a model
outlined in our Literacy Guidelines This
model is child centered and designed to meet the individual needs of all
of our students.
The Polson Partnership
Project, an early intervention school-based support program for families
, is located at Cherry Valley. The school has a strong volunteer program
which includes a community reading program and parent volunteers who work
in the classrooms and a publishing Center. This year we welcome the addition
of the "America Reads" program with a full time Vista volunteer.
Physical education and music classes are provided by a certified instructors
for classes twice a week.
Cherry Valley's Title 1 program includes the Reading
Recovery® program for first graders, implemented by two Reading
Recovery teachers.
Cherry Valley has a complete library with a collection of children's literature
and reference materials. The library also serves as a media center with
full Internet connections and Email capabilities on a Power Macintosh computer.
